Insight on my Grades

I review as many movies as I can and give each film a grade. This grade is reflective of my overall thoughts about the movie. An A or above means that I really had a great time watching the film. B scores mean that the film was really good. In some cases, it even means that I loved the film. Ted 2 is one of these scores. I loved Ted 2. I thought it did exactly what it promised: it made me laugh. However, I'll admit that a film like American Sniper was a better quality film, It was a higher level film than Ted.

An A+ doesn't mean that the movie is my favorite of the year. I gave American Sniper an A+ and Fury Road a lower score, but I feel Fury Road is a more entertaining movie. Why did I give Sniper an A+? Sniper set out to be a military biography, and it did it wonderfully.

In short, if you try to be a certain genre of movie, and you excel at that category of movie, you will be in consideration for an A grade or even an A+

Hope that makes my grading system simpler....

Terminator: Genisys

Genisys follows essentially the same basic format as 1984's Terminatior, in which a cyborg is sent back to hunt down Sarah Connor. Kyle Reese is sent to protect Sarah Connor. In this film, Reese is sent back, but finds Connor already aware of Skynet.

The Terminator franchise is one of my favorite series of all time because of Arnold's Terminator, and he is just as awesome in this new timeline as before.

Is this film as good as T1 or T2? No, but that is because of unfair expectations. Nothing will ever be as good as Cameron's direction, but as its own story, Genisys is solid. It holds its own, and that is a good thing.

Ted 2

Plot: Ted has to prove that he is a human in a court of law to gain the same basic rights as humans.

Ted 2 is essentially the same as Ted: Seth McFarlane trademarks are filled in this movie. I loved the first Ted, as I said in my previous review, and so I was eagerly waiting to see if this movie would be as consistently hilarious as the last one, and....

Ted 2 is one of the best comedy sequels of the year, because it understands what it is. This series is not meant to win  any awards, it is meant to be entertaining, and that is exactly what Ted 2 is.

I loved Ted 2!! Definitely seeing it again and picking up the Blu-Ray to own as soon as it comes out.

Ted: 2012

Ted is about a stuffed teddy bear that comes to life when a young boy wishes for a friend. The boy and his bear are now shown as adults, and have adventures together.

This film is directed by Seth McFarlane, it stars Seth McFarlane as Ted, and it shows. This movie has all of the McFarlane markers on it. Whenever you watch his works, you know your film isn't going to be accepted by everyone, have outrageous over-exaggerated jokes and contain a spontaneous fight sequence.

Ted is essentially a feature length Family Guy episode. It features cameos, and spoofs of other popular films.

I absolutely love the first 90 minutes of Ted. The human characters played by Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis are very good, and the scenes are hilarious. Ted as a character is awesome, he is the driving force of the movie, and it works brilliantly.

My one flaw is the last twenty minutes, the focus shifts to a less funny plot with a car chase and while good, the scenes doesn't have a lot of the jokes that the first 90 minutes had.

But still, I loved Ted and can't wait to see Ted 2!!!

Jurassic World

The 4th Jurassic movie...

We now have a real fully functioning theme park, but a dinosaur escapes and has to be stopped. The film has the same basic structure of the previous films, a company invests in dinosaurs, they escape and have to be caught.

I have seen this twice now and had very similar thoughts each time. See, I think this is a really good movie that got better for me on a second viewing, but I think that there is something missing. I feel like it is not one thing, and I can't quite pinpoint it. I guess that it is the novelty of the ideas. When you have an awesome first movie, the sequels have to compete with unfair expectations.

Grade: B-

Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park is the first film in the Jurassic franchise. Without this film, there would not be three sequels to speak off. First off, this is the best film in the series by far. This movie did something that we hadn't seen before, and I think hasn't been fully imitated since. Before this, dinosaurs were always cartoonish, they were always seen in animated cartoons in the past. We always imagined what these creatures were like, and Jurassic Park showed us exactly what dinosaurs are.

This movie is the first time that the dinosaurs behaved like living creatures. Combine that with a great theme and the structure of an excellent source novel by Crichton and you have an excellent film.

Entourage: The Movie

This review is for the film, not the TV show. I have not seen the TV show.

Basically what this movie is about is a movie producer and his friend trying to get a movie that they loved to make made. Their friends help them get this film made and celebrities cameo throughout.

In my opinion, the most entertaining aspect of this film is the cameos because there is really no film here. Scenes are made just to have a cameo, and while that hurts the grade that I can give this, it still was fun to see different actors have 5 seconds in this movie.

But aside from that, there just isn't alot there to review.

My grade is: C for the Cameos.

San Andreas

A massive earthquake hits California: the basic plot of this movie.

Wow!!! This movie is not a movie that is trying to win any awards or any art notices. This movie is just trying to entertain, and it does that very well.

Easily Dwayne Johnson's best movie!

Tomorrowland

This film should be re-titled: Dreams and Destines: A college thesis by George Clooney. The basic plot is that the world's smartest and bravest dreamers created a world called Tomorrowland  and mankind has to find it to survive the end of the world.

All this movie is is Brad Bird directing awesome visuals with George Clooney teaching us about dreams and goals.

Every other performance is overshadowed by this lecture.

Grade:

C-

Not worth seeing a clip of this film. Really hoped it would be a better movie.

Ex Machina

Ex Machina is a film that has a contained simple plot: A computer programmer wins a lottery contest to be able to test the first artificial intelligence. The test is whether or not this programmer can tell whether he is interacting with something artificial. Of course, this test leads to consequences.

This movie is one of the best of the year so far in my opinion. The movie doesn't have a lot of movement and action, but it certainly has strong plot points. When a movie doesn't have explosions and stunts, it needs an engaging idea to build its story around, This is one of the best plots of the year, and so I have no choice but to give it a:

B+

Mad Max: Fury Road

Mad Max is a film that shouldn't be spoiled at all. I am not going to talk much about the movie, but I will say this: Fury Road has some of the best action scenes of the year. I will definitely see it again.

Grade: A-

Avengers: Age Of Ultron

Plot: A group of superheroes must stop an AI from destroying mankind.

First off, I love Marvel movies. They are superior to DC's films because they are fun entertaining movies with awesome characters. That is why the first Avengers was awesome: it did what entertained the comic book fans...

Age of Ultron  is the exact same way, and that is why it is my favorite film of 2015 so far. The characters are interesting: every single one. There is not one single character that is thrown off to the side. They all are fantastic. Ultron was a cool new addition as well.

See this film:

Many Reviews

I have seen so many films over the past couple weeks, so here are my short reviews for each.

Run All Night: Really surprised me. I wasn't expecting such a great movie. I'm sure this will change after Avengers, but right now this is my 3rd favorite film of the year behind American Sniper and Kingsman. Neeson's best since the first Taken,

Grade A-

Get Hard: Will Farrell and Kevin Hart: that is the humor that you are going to get.

Grade: B

Furious 7

Have not seen any of the other films in the series, but after this I want to. The airplane chase is awesome.

Grade: B+

Divergent and Insurgent: It is a toss up for me. I simply don't know which one is better. Insurgent definitely has more action than the first. Both good movies.

Series Grade: B

Chappie, Focus, and Cinderella

Movie Review: Chappie

This movie is about an artificial intelligence that is created to protect mankind, and the struggles he faces adapting to Earth's ways.

I have seen 2 Neil Blomkamp films. Elysium and Chappie. Chappie is my preferred film because it has more depth and a strong plot. Definitely worth seeing!!!

Grade: B

Focus:

A con man trains a woman how to con people to get she wants.

Very solid movie. Nothing really different or outstanding about this one. It was pretty generic, but it did its generic plot well.

My Grade:
B-

Cinderella

I have one major problem with this film. When your story is geared to one audience, you need to do something to engage to other audience. I have no problem with the actual story, there is just something missing.

Overall, I did not like this movie, and not because of the story, but because of the movie.

Ride for The Brand: The Allen High School Movie

This is a full hour documentary into the 4 time state champion Allen Eagles. I know everyone involved, as I am myself an Eagle, My friends Jordan Pryor and Riley Christensen have shown in this awesome documentary not only the great film program we have at Allen, but also how much pride we have in our school.

Great Job to all of the Eagles.

Kingsman: The Secret Service

Movie Review: Kingsman: The Secret Service

Plot: A secret agent teaches a teenager how to be a spy, so that he can save the world from Valentine.

This movie is awesome!!! Matthew Vaughn is one of my favorite directors. He directed First Class, as well as Kick-Ass, and here he does another bloody violent film.

I am not going to spoil this film for you.... however, my favorite scene would have to be at the church.

Go see this one:

Jupiter Ascending

Movie Review: Jupiter Ascending

Plot: A man has to protect a woman who is in line to own Earth's land.

I was interested in this film because it is directed by the same people who made the three Matrix films. The best way to describe this film is to compare to: Star Wars: Phantom Menace: This movie has a whole bunch of unimportant dialogue about inheritances and land and what will happen if a certain character does a certain action. The two main characters are good, but they are overshadowed by the terrible over dramatic villain.

It isn't terrible, there is just nothing here.

Project Almanac

Plot: Time Travel Movie in which teenagers travel back in time to make stupid life choices.

I don't mind time machines. I don't mind time travel films. In fact Terminator 2 is one of my favorite films ever, but this was:

STUPID

No plot in the entire movie.

Just time travel to go to a party.

This movie gets a grade of;

D: (Time travel is cool, only reason it doesn't get an F.)

American Sniper

American Sniper is Hollywood's latest biographical film about Chris Kyle. A lot of the films in this genre tend to have Hollywood influenced traits to make a movie. The studio will enhance certain traits of the person's life in order to make a engaging story.

This is the opposite: This is very grounded, real and factual, not glamorized in any way.... Bradley Cooper's best movie to date.

I absolutely loved this film, definitely worth the considerable awards mentions...

A+

Movie Reviews Marathon

After months of not getting to do reviews, I finally am back to posting regular reviews of movies.

This will be brief: I have seen 10+ films since November and will provide a brief review of each one.

Mockingjay Part I: Good movie, that makes you want to see Part II, but the first two movies were better.

Interstellar: Big Grand Space Epic with a long runtime, but that doesn't even matter, because I really liked the film.

Fury: Gory restrained film that had some of the most realistic action scenes of 2014.

Taken III: Good, but basically the same movie done three times.

Big Hero 6: One of my favorite animated films in recent memory. Loved it. Possibly the most fun kids movie of the year.

Blackhat: Hacking Thriller that does what it needs to do to be a good movie.

The Wedding Ringer: Kevin Hart's new film that is rated R, that is the humor in the film.

Below is a clip from Big Hero 6 as well as Fury:
