Gone Girl

Plot: A woman disappears under strange circumstances, prompting questioning.

This movie is not an action movie. It is a mystery thriller drama. Not a lot of action, instead we get an engaging movie that I absolutely loved. I won't get into much detail, as I feel like that spoils some of the film.

John Wick

Plot: A man wants revenge against the killers of his wife's final gift to him.

I loved this movie. Keanu Reeves best movie since The Matrix Trilogy in my opinion. The movie is simple, but is a lot of fun, and has one of my favorite action scenes of the year.

Disney's Alexander

Plot: A boy wishes a bad day on his entire family.

This film has such a simple plot. This movie warrants a simple review because there isn't anything to critique it on. It is a passable film, but so simple.

The Equalizer

Plot: A man tries to help the good side of society, while taking on a evil mafia gang.

This was one of my most anticipated releases of the year. It is directed by one of my favorite action movie directors: Antoine Fuqua, who directed Shooter and Olympus Has Fallen. Denzel Washington is one of my most reliable actors working today.

THIS MOVIE IS AWESOME:

Every single scene of this film has a goal. No shot is wasted on"meaningless plot exposition" mess. It is filmed with a tone of technical suspense. The action is my favorite part of this film. The action sequences are some of the most brutal, hard hitting scenes all year. This film definitely earns it's R rating, as well as a grade of:

A

Barco Escape: The Maze Runner

I work at Cinemark, and had the chance to see Cinemark's new Barco Escape. Escape is a new panoramic experience. It is three screens instead of one. The first movie in this format is Maze Runner, which is officially released on Friday.

This is awesome. There were 2 scenes using this great new technology, and they were my favorite parts of the movie. Barco is worth your time.

As far as the movie: one of the coolest movies I have seen in a while. Ever since Guardians we have gotten mostly average films, but that is not the case.,

Total Score: A

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Plot: A reporter stumbles across four mutant turtles, who bond together to fight against The Foot Clan.

This film is not one of the highlights of this year. However, certain elements worked: the jokes hit and this seems that a movie that every one enjoyed making. There isn't much to say here, the plot progresses in a very generic way, so that hinders a more analyzed opinion.

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For

Plot: Various stories tell about life in Sin City.

I really liked this movie. I had recently watched 2005's Sin City and was impressed by the visual flare that the movie provided. This time, we are still getting that flare and style, but this time it feels like we are getting more. The format is the same: The movie is composed into individual character based stories. This movie really needs more people to go see it. It doesn't have a huge market, but it is easily one of the most fun movies of the year.

And yes, it is better than the original!

Let's Be Cops

Plot: 2 friends are stuck in the pursuit of their dreams, so they decide to dress like cops.

This movie has a very simple plot: Act Like Cops. This can be done well: as seen in Ted and A Million Ways To Die In The West. Here: it provides for a very formula driven movie. This movie was low budget. Why? Because the plot has so many cliches. You know exactly where each action will be taken to advance the movie. In a film like this: You need steady laughs to compensate for your generic ideas. This has attempts of laughter given by the two best components of the movie: The 2 leads: Jake Johnson and Damon Wayons Jr.. They try to make us laugh time after time, but the script gives them a bland formula, with no freedom to create something awesome.

How I define this film is a generic run of the mill dime a dozen comedy. There is nothing unique about this idea given to us in this movie.

This is the 2nd time back-to-back that I have felt this way.

Expendables 3: (Generic- Average)
Let's Be Cops:  ( Generic and Bland)

This movie is watchable, it just doesn't have any stand out moments that are unique.

The Expendables 3

Plot: The Expendables fight to stop Barney's old teammate.

This movie is one of the hardest movies of the year to review.... I loved the first two and really really wanted to have the same fun entertaining experience with this new entry in the series. The Expendables 3 is good, but in a very uneventful way.

Unlike the first 2, this movie is rated PG-13, and while this was not a huge problem for me, it did make for fast cuts placed in the movie.

You had whatever cool action shot start and then end, with no middle. The filmmakers stretched 5 shots into 10, and I would have preferred to have seen one fluid motion of action as opposed to several quick flashes of action.

New Additions are great:

Wesley Snipes was one of the best characters in the movie, he finally is given a character to play.
Antonio Banderas adds great humor,

AND THEN WE GET THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IN THE FILM

MEL GIBSON AS THE VILLAIN!!!!

We hear that Gibson was a former teammate of Barney. We see Stallone's reasons for going after this guy. They hate each other, so we have our conflict.

My problem with this is that we don't understand Gibson's point. He is a weapons dealer, who happens to hate Barney. Why does he want weapons? What is his goal? All we know is that he wants to get revenge on Barney.

This movie is good, yet uneventful, it is a film that you can say. "Ok, I saw it" Not "That was awesome."

Guardians of the Galaxy

Plot: Outlaws and Criminals unite to stop a powerful orb from falling into the wrong hands.

This is Marvel's new movie, and we have had luck this years Marvel films: The Amazing Spider-Man 2,
X-Men: Days of Future Past, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and now Guardians of the Galaxy.

The trend of Marvel greatness continues. Guardians of the Galaxy is a very different Marvel film. Some Marvel films have had a dark undertone, like Winter Soldier did. This movie does not have that, instead it is replaced with very clever and witty humor.

My favorite thing about this movie is: Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, definitely one of my favorite characters of the year. Rocket is the character that is so outrageous in the way he acts, he always has a joke to say about every other scenario and he is easily that funniest character in the film

This movie is worth checking out in XD 3D, as it is very entertaining, funny, and cool.

Lucy

Movie Review: Lucy

Plot: A new drug allows a woman to access 100% of her brain capacity.

Wow, what a weird movie!!!

This movie is one that needs multiple viewings to grasp the scope of the idea. The premise is about what would happen if a human could access all of their brain and acquire revolutionary skills. The idea is the best part of the movie. The idea is presented in a very clever and stylized way, all credited to Luc Besson.

As far as the cast:

Morgan Freeman is Morgan Freeman
All of the action involving Lucy is very convincing.

Everything is handled well, Lucy is just the kind of film that needs multiple viewings to establish a clear opinion,

The movie is good though.

X-Men: Franchise

After going to the theater again to see X-Men: Days Of Future Past, I decided to give my thoughts on the series in general.

First, a lot of critics have a "mixed bag perception" to this series, just because of The Last Stand and Origins, I do not share this view.

I have enjoyed every single film in the series. There have been some entries that were not as solid as others, but there has not been a bad X-Men film.

The acting is always solid with Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart being perfect in their roles, as well as the "new" actors, McAvoy and Fassbender being great as well.

My thoughts on this series are:

1. Actors have done the best they can with material provided.
2. Every director brought their version of a perfect X-Men universe
3: I doubt that Ratner, who directed the often critically panned:"The Last Stand" purposely set up to disappoint fans.

The films that others don't like are because they misinterpreted the world of the X-Men, not the characters or acting.

Days Of Future Past is the best, but that doesn't mean every single non  "Singer" film is a total trainwreck.

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes

Plot: A scientist discovers a neurological enhancement and begins researching and testing on apes. The drug has unforeseen side effects and the apes gain intelligence, prompting the apes to rise up.

This movie is very solid. You can tell that the filmmakers wanted to create a saga. They wanted to reboot the Apes series into a fresh and exciting new direction that could contain multiple sequels.

THEY DID IT... They achieved their goals.

The reboot compliments its sequel "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes" extremely well through the eyes of Caesar, the ape brought to life by incredible motion capture work. This film sets up everything you need to know going forward into Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.

I highly recommend seeing both films, this is a great new reinvented franchise.

My Grade:

B+ (Film is set up to the superior sequel.)

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes

Plot: Set in the aftermath of a devastating virus, resources are scarce. Mankind desperately needs resources found deep within the apes territory, setting up a conflict.

First off, this movie is very similar to The Dark Knight, it does for its franchise what Nolan did so well in the modern Dark Knight Trilogy.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes outdoes its reboot in every way.

What I really loved about this movie was that even when there was no action, the movie had so much intensity. The apes were so mysterious and lifelike, and that is the action of this film. You are so drawn to Caesar's ape kingdom, and the mannerisms between apes that you can't help but say;

WOW!!!

That is not to say that the humans weren't good, they were fine, but it was the visual scope of the apes combined with a great emotional Andy Serkis performance that makes this a great mind-blowing visual experience.

My Grade:

A+ (Yes, a perfect score for the Apes)

Transformers: Age of Extinction

Plot: Humans have turned on the Transformers and have begun hunting them down in the middle of the Autobot Decepticon war.

Wow... A lot of thoughts on this one...

The tagline for this movie is: The Rules Have Changed
First off: Any one who thought that this movie would be any different than Michael Bay's other movies is wrong, Age of Extinction has Michael's Bays trademarks plastered all over it. This movie is 2 hours and 45 minutes of explosions. The action plays out like one giant fireworks shows with robots providing the spark.

Mark Wahlberg is the main character to this movie. He discovers Optimus Prime, who is in my opinion the standout of the movie, and the hunting starts and we have our movie.

What I am trying to say is that characters and plot are second priority to the explosions.

The action was

VERY GOOD!!!!

A lot of really cool action shots of the Autobots!!!

Only negative: The length of the movie isn't too long, it is just that if characters discovered other characters motives, the movie would be around 100 minutes.

Still...

My Grade:
B+

Comedy Rankings

I have seen three comedies recently and have decided to rank them:

#!: A Million Ways To Die In The West
Seth McFarlane plays Seth McFarlane. His humor is the driving force of the movie. I'm a huge Family Guy fan, so I thought  this movie was laugh out loud funny.

#2: 22 Jump Street
A good movie that follows the same format as 21 Jump Street. This movie isn't laugh out loud, but it does have some comedic moments.

#3: Think Like A Man Too

The trailer ruined this movie. The actors try to deliver laughs, but everything is forced at the audience. The jokes are repetitive, and if you have seen the trailer, you have seen the best highlights of the movie. I will not say that this is a bad movie, it's just that after the trailer, the laughs are predictable and forced.

22 Jump Street

Movie Review: 22 Jump Street

This movie is a sequel to 21 Jump Street and the plot is basically the same as it was in the first one.

Plot: Two police officers go undercover in a college to stop the spread of an illegal drug.

The setting of the plot is different, but the structure of the plot is the same.

This movie was good. I thought that Jonah Hill was funny as usual. Channing Tatum was good. Out of the two, Jonah Hill was better from a comedy aspect. A major plus to this sequel was the expanded role of Ice Cube, he has a lot more screen time, and his character feels necessary, not just a character who "gave assignments for the sake of the story".

Not going to spoil anything, but the credits of this movie are one of the best parts of the movie!!!

My Grade: B

Think Like A Man Too

Movie Review: Think Like A Man Too

Plot: Friends get together to celebrate the marriage of Michael and Candice through a bachelor party in Vegas.

In fact let me rephrase:

A bachelor party with Kevin Hart.

I went to see this film because of Kevin Hart. I think that he is funny and so I was hoping for laughs.

Instead I got a formula movie with a few already spoonfed laughs provided by Kevin Hart

This must have been the film making process:

1.Bachelor Party
2. Be sure we state that we are in Vegas
3 Jokes that are rushed with Kevin Hart trying
4.  Jokes that are rushed with Kevin Hart trying
5 .  Jokes that are rushed with Kevin Hart trying
6.    Jokes that are rushed with Kevin Hart trying
7: Some obligated fight
8  What can we do?
9  What can we do?
10 Some Disappointing Moments
11.Some Disappointing Moments
12  Kevin Hart Trying
13 Cliches in every comedy that deals with marriage.
14.Cliches in every comedy that deals with marriage.
15: And in the end, we want to have a happy uplifting ending, so let's have everybody be happy and in love.
16: The End

The reason that I repeated so many times is that this movie kept repeating the same humorous techniques and expecting us to laugh when we already had seen it before.

Yes, I saw the 1st movie.... Thought it was considerably better than this forced attempt at humor.

There are funny scenes, but they are so brief, that they are shown in the trailer.

Pros: Kevin Hart and Michael Ealy were trying
Cons: Cliches, Spoilers, and Forced Humor combined with a rushed Wrap Up Ending

Because I know how funny Kevin Hart can be:

I am going to give this film a generous grade of:
C-

A Million Ways To Die In The West

Movie Review: A Million Ways To Die In The West

Plot: Seth McFarlane plays Albert, a sheep farmer out to prove that he is strong and courageous in the face of the many terrible causes of death in the west. All of this starts when his girlfriend breaks up with him, causing him to be brave facing western danger.

This movie requires no set-up. The driving force of the plot is given to you in the first 5 minutes. I think that this was smart, as it allows the jokes to start immediately. The jokes are not complicated and are not complex as many comedies are.

The best way to describe this humor: A Family Guy Episode Set In The Old West.

If you have seen Family Guy, you have seen the type of humor delivered in this film.

However the way that I'm going to judge this is simply on the level of laughs:

Did I Laugh: Yes
Supporting Cast Had Laughs: (Liam Neeson, Charlize Theron, Neil Patrick Harris): Yes
Fun Cameos: Yes

Edge of Tomorrow

Movie Review: Edge of Tomorrow

The plot of this movie is multi dimensional, meaning that it's simple yet complex.

The basic plot of this film is Tom Cruise's character William Cage has to try to prevent the alien invasion taking place on Europe, with the help of a military warrior and his new found power to "reset" one day in combat.

This movie is one that I think it's better not to know much more that what I just mentioned because the movie wants the plot to be simple so that the audience will understand one of the main goals of the film, making you understand the reset.

The best part of this movie is the characters:

Both Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt do very good work here and you can tell that they are committed to making this plot work, which requires them to sell the action, the concept of the reset, and they ability to comprehend the alien technology.

The one negative for me was that I didn't read the manga that this come from "All You Need Is Kill" so I was not prepared to see something so complex like I did with this movie.

This movie is not subtracted by anything really, I just wasn't prepared for all of the unique details entailed in this film.

My Grade:

B+

X-Men: Days Of Future Past

Movie Review: X-Men: Days Of Future Past

This movie can very complicated to review and make a solid opinion on depending on your movie tastes and preferences. Days of Future Past is a time travel movie set in the X-Men universe. Therefore, if you are not a fan of time travel movies or superhero movies in general, you probably will be left confused and dissappointed.

However: being a fan of the X-Men Movies I can say that this movie was awesome. It handled the time travel heavy storyline with respect and was very easy to follow, provided you are already familiar with prior events told in the X-Men Story Arc.

I would suggest watching all previous films to better understand the story of Days of Future Past.

This movie gets a score of : A+
